The Nintendo DS Lite is a dual-screen handheld gaming console developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It is slimmer, brighter and an even more lightweight redesign of the Nintendo DS. It was designed to be aesthetically sleeker than the Game Boy Advance SP, while still appealing to broader commercial audiences. It was announced on January 26th, 2006 for release in the United States. With it’s broad appeal , it has been sold and released in North America, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, Singapore, and even in defined regions of South America, East Asia and the Middle East. The sales total for this gaming system is quite impressive also, nearing over 65 million sales worldwide and growing, according to Nintendo.

This unit is also capable of receiving Wi Fi signals from other Nintendo DS Lite systems, the original Nintendo DS, Nintendo’s Wii gaming console and also Wi-Fi access points. And although WEP encrypted networks are supported, WPA encryption is not.

So what are the main differences between the original DS and the DS Lite?
-Weight: The DS Lite is 218 g/7.69oz – that is a whole 21% lighter than the DS
-Dimensions: The DS Lite is 133m x 73.9 mm x 21.5 mm. This is vs. 148.7mm x 84.7 mm x 28.9 mm- This is 42% less volume than the DS.
-Extended battery life when compared to the original DS. With a full three-hour the battery will last fifteen to nineteen hours on the minimum brightness settings and five to eight hours on the lowest minimum battery setting. Both being independent of the type of game activity. After 500 charges, the battery lift can expect to drop. The DS is supplied with a 850 mAh battery and the DS Lite has a 1000mAh battery.
-The DS Lite has a brighter, more durable top and bottom LCD screens, with four levels of brightness. Also designed to be more shock resistant. The option to turn off the backlight in the main menu has been removed.
-Larger stylus, making it easier to hold. The stylus is now also loaded in the side and located next to the power switch, making it much more readily accessible.
-The D-pad was reduced 18. 6 mm across which is 16% smaller than the original DS, but the A,B, X and Y buttons retain the same directions. The D-Pad shares the same lines as the Wii Remote and the Game Boy Micro.
-The Start and Select buttons have been relocated under the A.B.X and Y buttons and are smaller then the original buttons
-Eleven fabulous colors to choose from including Enamel Navy, Ice blue, Polar White, Coral Pink, Onyx Black, Metallic Rose, Gloss silver, Crimson/Black, Cobalt/Black, Turquoise, Red and Green.
-A built-in microphone is now located between the top and bottom screens of the DS Lite.
-The processors are the same as the DS, only thing their made on a smaller custom process so they require less power , thus making less heat.
